This series contains the classified central subject files of the U.S. Embassy, Egypt, located in Cairo. The files typically consist of instructions, despatches, telegrams, memoranda, reports, and other correspondence with the Department of State in Washington; notes to and from the host government; correspondence with the embassies of other nations; correspondence with other United States embassies and consulates; correspondence with private individuals and businesses; and internal memoranda and reports exchanged between embassy officials. Subjects covered may include the internal political, defense, economic, governmental, cultural, and social affairs of the host country; the bilateral relations of the United States and the host country; the relations of the host country with its neighbors, international organizations, and other nations; international conferences; science; and any subject which embassy officials felt might impact the interests of the United States. Administrative and consular files may include information on internal operations and organization of the Embassy and Embassy efforts on behalf of United States citizens and businesses.

The U.S. Embassy was reestablished in Cairo on February 28, 1974, with Ambassador-designate Hermann F. Eilts in charge. He presented his credentials on April 20, 1974.
